There is a war being waged on women.
A narrative is being written that calls on the categorization of all women as either Madonna or Whore.
But please do not limit your thinking to just the recent legislation on women’s reproductive rights, as destructive as that may be. The assault on public school teachers is part of the war on women. The attacks on public worker unions are part of the war on women. Attacks against minimum wage, overtime pay, and safer working conditions are all flavored with a disdain for women. Big box stores with their redefining of full time work and insistence on set bathroom breaks forcing women to wear diapers to work in order to avoid accidents, is part of a war on women.
Requiring the unemployed to pee in a cup before receiving relief is part of the war on women.
Women are more likely to be numbered among the working poor, more likely to need public assistance, more likely to be paid under industry average in the professions, less likely to attain the benefits of seniority, less likely to attain promotion, and less likely to complain about or fight back against such injustice than men are. Therefore women are the perfect target: we take a lickin’ and keep on tickin.’
But the center cannot hold and the burden of long hours, short pay, and no appreciation can’t go on much longer. Now as more and more of “man’s work” is disappearing form the job scene and those men are competing for work under the titles teacher, nurse, teller, etc. the time of reckoning is faster approaching than ever.
Gender, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, age are all colliding in devastating ways and adding to that the growing inadequacies of our capitalistic system to provide or support a middle class, can an apocalypse be too far off?
Of course, people may be so numbed and dumbed by the time the crisis hits that they, like the frog in the slowly heating pot, may not even notice the burn and simply, quietly die. Such dystopian vision is not out of the question.
Will this be the inglorious end of human civilization … or will we fight back?
