Don’t you just hate being right?
Long ago, I realized that the so called “abortion debate” in this country was not about the right to choose or the right to life. Too many people on the right to choose side belittle women who stayed in the home and took care of their families and too many people on the on the right to life side were pro death penalty. What has going on here was whether or not women in the aggregate were going to be forced to live in a TV version of 1954 or not. With recent republican victories in state houses around the county and their volumes of new legislation, the truth is coming out and I was right.
We are now about to see that I was once again right.
My state (NC) voted for an amendment to our state constitution making illegal recognition of domestic unions between consenting adults that are outside of a traditional marriage between one man and one woman. Notice I did not say “Gay Marriage.” That’s because the law doesn’t say that. While domestic relationship among same sex partners falls within the jurisdiction of the law, this law does so much more.
Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State

So what does this mean? Quite a lot actually and quickly too.
Bill James held off an aggressive challenge from Ed Driggs to win the GOP primary for the District 6 seat on the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, with the eight-term incumbent commissioner capturing nearly 52 percent of the vote.
But less than eight hours after taking the win in the heavily Republican district, James’ attention wasn’t focused on his General Election opponent, Democrat Connie Green-Johnson, but on how the results of Tuesday night’s Amendment One vote would impact Mecklenburg County employee policy.
The constitutional amendment, which makes marriage between a man and a woman the “only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized” in North Carolina, easily won approval at the polls with a 61 percent margin.
In that light, James is already pushing Mecklenburg to scrap its policy that provides domestic partner health insurance benefits to employees in same-sex relationships. The county has been offering same-sex benefits to employees since commissioners approved the policy in 2009.
[Now that Amendment One has passed], it … not only take[s] away legal protections for gay and lesbian families in North Carolina, it … also get[s] rid of straight domestic partnerships and other currently legal cohabitation arrangements which in turn … Affect[s] laws – including domestic violence protections, spousal visitation rights, and health care coverage.
When the proponents for the Amendment say they are not against gays, but for marriage, they are only partly lying. They are against gays, but they are REALLY for marriage and will cut off as many avenues as possible that get people around it. Married heterosexual couples with two point four children where the men head the family, win the bread, and rule the castle will be God’s will on Earth, whether people like it or not.
And if cutting off benefits, denying rights, and breaking up families is the way to bring about that will, so be it.
